The Hymn Trainer method

How to learn your part

You do not need to become a music theorist before you can sing harmony. Begin by listening closely, then add your voice one phrase at a time.

  1. 1

    Listen first

Solo your voice and follow its movement on the score. Notice where it repeats and where it moves against the melody.

  2. 2

    Hum the line

Slow the tempo and hum before adding words. Repeat until entrances and longer notes feel expected.

  3. 3

    Add the text

Sing the words with your part still soloed. Let the one-measure count-in establish a steady pulse.

  4. 4

    Restore the harmony

Bring the other parts back gradually. Keep listening for your line without trying to overpower the whole.
